Supporting Skills for Life Learners

Product Graphic These materials are for candidates enrolled on the Level 2 Certificate course, which is designed for support staff, including:

  • volunteers
  • mentors
  • skills champions
  • signposters
  • union learning representatives
  • learning facilitators.

The materials allow candidates to study in their own time away from classes, consolidate their learning and cover additional material. They also provide the basis for development by Level 2 course providers. The qualification is offered by different awarding bodies. To obtain a certificate candidates must be registered with a centre that offers the qualification.

The course has five units each covered by various modules:

  • Unit 1: Working in the sector
    - Modules:  The role and context; The adult literacy, Numeracy and ESOL context; Identifying needs; Getting the message across.
  • Unit 2: Supporting learners
    - Modules: Working as part of a team; Helping with care and support; Helping the learner; Helping with resources.
  • Unit 3a: Literacy
    - Modules: The literacy curriculum; Speaking and listening; Reading and writing text focus; Reading and writing words and sentence focus.
  • Unit 3b: Numeracy
    - Modules: The language of numeracy in communication; Numbers and calculations; Handling data, understanding measures, shape and space.
  • Unit 3c: ESOL
    - Modules: The language learning process and context; Language awareness and use - text level; Language awareness and use - sentence and word level.

Each module includes:

  • Objectives
  • Introduction
  • Self-test
  • Key concepts
  • Activities
  • Resources
  • End test
  • Reflection.

To obtain a qualification, candidates must complete units 1 and 2 plus one of the three specialist units in unit 3: Literacy, Numeracy, or ESOL. The materials indicate where candidates need to find out about local circumstances; in unit 2, candidates are required to undertake a placement supporting a learner. Course providers are expected to arrange the placement and support the candidate.

The materials are simple to navigate and use. Each section consists of text on a series of HTML pages viewed with a standard browser, supported by a small amount of multimedia, including some activities from Tribal CTAD's Target Skills suite of resources; and links to web sites containing relevant information. The majority of the activities provide links to word processed documents which candidates can complete and save locally. These documents can be adapted, and they will contribute portfolio evidence for assessment.
