Upskilling McDonald's crew

Mcdonald's exam centre

Tribal CTAD and fast food giant McDonald's have joined forces in a groundbreaking project to help their front line employees brush up and improve their English and maths skills. The scheme was launched on 18 September at a high profile event in London's West End.

We've been working with the McDonald's national HR team and the LSC's National Employer Service to create an innovative and engaging e-learning system that allows learners to take nationally recognised Level 1 and 2 qualifications, delivered entirely online, in accredited exam centre restaurants.

CTAD's expertise in developing cutting-edge multimedia products to widen learning opportunities meant we were well equipped to create the My Learning sections of the new McDonald's personal development site, www.ourlounge.co.uk.  My Learning takes a McDonald's employee through a learning journey; it starts by assessing the current skills level, creating a personalised, individual learning plan that reflects the learner's capabilities and needs.  The learning plan brings in a series of interactive, web-based activities, including the popular CTAD Target Skills packages but also includes links to materials from the BBC, NIACE and the DfES.  After having passed two practice tests, the option of taking an OCR Skills for Life national test at a nearby test-ready McDonald's restaurant becomes available.

My Learning's pedagogy is based on the successful national programme Move On which we manage. Move On, www.move-on.org.uk was established in July 2003 to broaden the range of Skills for Life learners taking a national certificate in adult literacy and numeracy at Level 1 and 2, to diversify the learning menu, and to promote the value of the Skills for Life national qualifications.

LSC chairman Chris Banks who attended the launch said it was particularly important that employees could gain qualifications at "the click of a mouse".

"This is a significant step," he said. "Making learning easy and accessible is crucial to increasing the number of people with these essential qualifications and your people will benefit enormously and so will McDonald's as a business."
