Families for Our Times

12 March 2007 The QEII Conference Centre, London.

This conference builds on the highly successful conferences of the previous two years. The conference’s main aim is to examine the roles of families in supporting learning and exploring the current policy context and practice.

The National Family Learning Network (NFLN) has developed a strong working relationship with the BBC’s Child of Our Time team – Child of Our Time is a landmark series that features a large number of families whose children were born around the new millennium and who represent the widest possible range of genetic, social, geographical and ethnic backgrounds. The series has been commissioned to answer the age-old question of whether we are born or made. The series has been given 20 years to conduct a massive series of experiments on the selected families’ children as they grow. These fascinating experiments will build up a coherent picture of the way genes and environments interact to make us who we are. Each year the series provides a valuable backdrop for the NFLN annual conference, providing fascinating insights, interesting themes and research to support the conference’s interactive forums.

Forums include:
The Will to Win – looking at the impact of family learning in increasing life chances and paving the way to the road to success for families
Fitting In and Standing Out – celebrating cultural diversity showcasing family learning good practice
Creativity and Imagination – family learning working imaginatively with families to increase their creativity
Putting Dads in the Picture – exploring family learning good practice in working with dads
Family Learning In and Out of Prison – exploring a variety of approaches and activities used in work with men and women in and out of prison
Reading Families – engaging families in reading, increasing confidence and inspiring learning.

The NFLN is a practitioner network with over 8,000 members, who work with an estimated 5 million families per year to support learning in a diverse range of settings.
