The latest addition to our popular English in Action series, English in Action: At Work, has been developed in partnership with Newham College and is designed for self-study, classroom work or as the basis of group activity.
Realistic video scenarios are used to present authentic settings with a work-based theme, enabling learners to practise the language and skills needed for a variety of tasks. The specific vocational areas in the resources are based on are construction, leisure, childcare, hospitality and tourism, and health and beauty. Care has been taken to ensure that characters used in the videos are representative of the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) community – sex, age and background vary but result in a balanced sample.
Using the materials will allow the learner to gain authentic practice in language appropriate for work or to practise before taking the ESOL Skills for Life qualification at Level 1.
“It’s a really useful resource . . . the authentic video material is great for helping them get used to the sounds of English.”
Joanna Fayram, head of ESOL,
New College, Durham
“You don’t miss anything because you have control. It helps you learn about the way of life in Britain and helps you to be independent. ”
Rhuksana Minhas,
L1 learner from Pakistan
