How do I deploy Target Skills to a network?

< Back to Target Skills

1. Installing Target Skills to a network drive

a. Map a shared network drive to the location that you want to install Target Skills (e.g. 'G:\' - do not use UNC).

b. Run setup.exe from the root of the CD (if not launched by autorun).

c. On screen 2, select 'Install Target Skills'.

d. Set the path for the destination location (currently 'C:\CTAD courses\Target Skills') to the networked drive (which must have the same mapping for all workstations that will be using it).

e. When given the option, install all multimedia files to the network drive so that you no longer need the CD. Selecting the option of installing the multimedia files causes the text-to-speech installation and plugins to check files that are to be copied to the drive.

f. Skip the installation of the text-to-speech engine and the plugins check.

g. Once you have installed all the CDs (if you have bought more than one), the install directory can be made read/execute only, with the following exceptions:

  • The user_work folder in \CTAD courses\Target Skills which requires full access rights.
  • The areulocal.js file in \CTAD courses\Target Skills\courses\intro which requires full access and allows students to open their locally saved action packs, if they have not yet sent it to the web site.

2. Setting up Target Skills on each workstation

a. Map a shared network drive to the location that you installed Target Skills, using the same drive letter as the server.

b. Browse to the network folder where Target Skills has been installed (use either Windows Explorer, 'Run ...' from the Start menu, or 'Add/remove programs' from Start menu\Settings\Control Panel).

c. Run client_installation_controller.exe. This provides the same series of pages for installing as setup.exe on the CD.

d. Click the Install Target Skills button to create the shortcuts and file associations required to run Target Skills on the workstation.

e. For CDs other than Initial Assessment and Level 1 Numeracy, install the Microsoft Speech SDK and Microsoft Text-to-Speech Engine (attempting to run Target Skills without installing Text-to-Speech will remove the file association that launches TTS on that workstation) by clicking the Install TTS button.

f. Each machine that is to run Target Skills needs to have Adobe Shockwave/Flash player and a recent version of Windows MediaPlayer installed. Target Skills will check that these are present every time it runs, and points the user to the Internet for the latest versions.

The client_installation_controller.exe allows these players to be checked and installed if needed.
