?6m funding for mobile devices

£6m funding available to FE colleges to buy mobile devices

It has recently been announced that the Learning and Skills Council is going to make £6 million available to further education colleges and their partners to buy mobile learning devices. Colleges can apply for grants of between £100,000 and £500,000 to contribute to projects involving m-learning (to which colleges will be expected to contribute an additional minimum of 20% of funding received).

With over 25 years of experience in learning resource development, Tribal has been in the forefront of exploring the potential and applications of mobile technologies for learning. We are therefore delighted to hear that this exciting area is getting such mainstream recognition.

A groundbreaking suite of tools, learning objects and resources has been developed that will help you to deliver learning using a variety of mobile learning devices such as PDAs, Pocket PCs and even mobile phones.

MyLearning author
Create multiple-choice quizzes, matching exercises and snap games based on topics, vocabulary and levels of learning that are appropriate for your learners.

SMS quiz author
This online authoring tool allows you to create your own SMS (text message) quizzes in minutes. Participants answer questions by text and receive customised instant feedback. Great as a promotional tool, for use with dispersed groups of learners, as a ‘wake-up’ during a lesson or as a ‘hook into learning’ for disengaged youth.

The Get Mobile CD
An essential guide to getting you started with mobile learning, this resource is packed full of case studies, fact sheets, advice, reference material and more, including free ‘starter pack’ learning materials. Ideal for kick-starting your professional development and showing you what will work and what won’t.

mediaBoard
Learners send text (SMS) or picture (MMS) messages from their phones to the web-based mediaBoard to contribute to both personal and collaborative web sites.

Ready to use m-learning content
We also have a growing library of ready-made content for Pocket PCs, including screeners, and themed Skills for Life exercises incorporating literacy and numeracy modules mapped to the adult core curricula. These exercises cover such topics as driving, travel, food, health and fitness, safety at work, parenthood and money.
Purchase of these resources using the LSC grant funds will be permitted.
