Nothing happens when you select ‘Enter’ on the ‘Welcome to English in Action’ page

If nothing happens when you select ‘Enter’ on the ‘Welcome to English in Action’ page for English in Action: Entry 1, this could be the result of a Macromedia Flash upgrade.

English in Action: Entry 1 is part of a larger suite of ESOL resources; this particular title is mapped to the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum at Entry 1. All modules cover everyday situations that learners may encounter. Each module has a three-minute introductory video, which includes a variety of accents, including standard English and English spoken by people from around the world.

When English in Action was written, Flash 7 was the latest player, and this is the version that is bundled with the CD. Flash 8 incorporated additional security settings to close down risks from various sources. To stop Flash 8 from blocking access to English in Action: Entry 1, you need to configure the Flash player to trust the software.

To do this, you need to do the following:

  1. Right click on the screen where the program is blocked, select ‘Settings’, then select the ‘Advanced’ option.
  2. In the Flash Player Help document under the Settings Manager - Table of Contents, select ‘Global Security Settings Panel’.
  3. The manager loaded is a ‘live’ manager; it is here that we need to make the configuration.
  4. Select ‘Edit Location...’ and then ‘Add Location...’
  5. In the ‘Trust this location’ field, enter the location of the installed files.
  6. If you are using the CD installation, by default this would be ‘C:\CTAD Courses’.
  7. Select ‘Confirm’ and close all browsers to apply the configuration changes.
  8. When you next start English in Action you should now be able to go beyond the entry page.
  9. Note: it is possible to configure the Macromedia Flash Player Settings Manager directly through your browser here

Please note that there’s a known bug with the combination of Flash player 9.0.115 and Internet Explorer 7: click here for more information

If you’ve tried everything above with no luck, please update your Flash player at Adobe’s site:  http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&promoid=BUIGP.
