Step in to Learning

Step in to Learning websiteStep in to Learning has already made a significant contribution to the Skills for Life Strategy, by providing parents and carers with a first step into learning.

The current phase of Step in to Learning focuses on embedding and mainstreaming best practice to provide a sustainable delivery model across the country. This will improve the literacy, language and numeracy skills of the workforce in the early years and childcare sector, and of parents and carers, thereby improving the life chances of children in their care.

It is critical to take into account:

  • the National Childcare Strategy
  • the Green paper Every Child Matters
  • the work of Sure Start local programmes
  • children’s centres.

Frontline staff who serve members of the public in a range of contexts have a crucial role to play in encouraging, informing and supporting those most at risk of social exclusion. They need to adapt their approach to adults with literacy, language and numeracy needs, act as honest brokers for potential learners and signpost them to appropriate local provision - or even set up provision on site.

Tribal CTAD, along with Tribal Government Consulting, Pre-School Learning Alliance and the Daycare Trust is also taking full account of:

  • the work of CfBT in developing embedded learning opportunities for parents/carers and staff/trainees
  • Continuing Professional Development training programmes in the post 16 sector and in the early years and childcare workforce
  • the embedded learning project
  • the development of the Move-on approach for parents/carers and early years staff.
the work of the LSC and BSA in developing the Skills for Families project and family literacy, numeracy and language programmes
  • the work of the Sure Start Unit on Birth to Three Matters and Foundation Stage training frameworks for early years staff
  • mapping of the national standards for Skills for Life to the occupational standards
  • The work of the BSA on the Link Up project which seeks to recruit and train volunteers as adult learner supporters.
