Grass Routes

Grass Routes Building on existing work in voluntary and community sectors, this programme focuses on social enterprise and employee volunteering, and on embedding literacy, language and numeracy in community learning programmes and qualifications.

Grass Roots: voluntary and community:

  • supports implementation of Skills for Life amongst the hard-to-reach through volunteering and the voluntary and community sector
  • builds on and broadens the coverage of existing work within the voluntary and community sector
  • develops new approaches to community and social enterprise and responsibility to support implementation of Skills for Life amongst vulnerable constituencies.

Strand One: Social Enterprise and Employee Volunteers (One year project): identifying and working with large social enterprises to set up, recruit, train and support employee volunteers in supporting Skills for Life learners in the community

Strand Two: Embedding literacy, language and numeracy in community teaching/learning programmes and qualifications (Two year project): building on existing and establishing new public and private partnerships so that Skills for Life is accessed by new audiences and constituencies. This aims to increase the number of learners gaining literacy, numeracy or ESOL qualifications at or below Level 2 in the voluntary and community sector.
