Learning and Teaching Scotland

Study Skills and Information Literacy are resources produced on behalf of Learning and Teaching Scotland for the Scottish National Grid for Learning. The materials are aimed at children from 5-18. The sooner young people acquire these skills and practise them, the more adept they will become at taking charge of their own learning, becoming confident, independent learners.

Across the age ranges, care has been taken to map language and learning strategies, visuals and audio, to create the optimum learning environment. Strategies for improving memory and recall are introduced initially to the youngest learners through games and animations. The same skills are gradually built upon with older learners, adding layers of more sophisticated and complex strategies that enable learners to have greater choice in applying the most appropriate methods for their own learning needs.

Study Skills covers topics such as:

  • Memory skills
  • Sorting information,
  • Learning from lectures
  • Visual literacy
  • Learning styles.

Information Literacy includes topics such as:

  • Sources of information
  • Searching the Internet
  • Asking questions
  • Using libraries
  • Storyboarding

These materials are supported by research papers and extensive teacher and parent notes.
